Bri's Success Story
At the young age of 12, I began a modeling career that grew to be very successful. I loved modeling, beauty and fashion were my passion. At 21 years old, I had a head-on collision driving 55 mph. The tragic accident forced my head through the windshield at impact. The skin was torn from my head and the right side of my face, and I was blinded in the right eye. My parents took me to four of the finest facial plastic surgeons on the West Coast who all told us the same thing – they needed to reconstruct the entire right side of my face because of the road rash and glass.
I knew that if I proceeded with reconstructive surgery, that my face would have looked different and my modeling contracts would be canceled. I was living my worst nightmare.
My life, my dreams and all I had worked for was at stake as I feared the end of my modeling career. With the loving support of my parents, I chose not to have the facial reconstructive surgery and instead pursued natural healing skin treatments.
During that time, I concentrated primarily on education regarding healing skin and anti-scarring. I knew the answers were out there, I just had to find them. I had three surgeries on my right eye and my vision returned eight months after the accident.
Fortunately, my modeling contracts were placed “on hold” through the recovery and I was able to take time off to heal. Through extensive research I learned to stay out of the sun and remained indoors, I applied primarily Vitamin E and Vitamin C to aid the healing process.
Almost a year to the day after the accident, I went outside in the sun for the very first time with no visible scars on my face - after four top surgeons in the country said it was not possible. I will never forget that day and the joy I felt as I knew I could now return to modeling. Because of my experience, my interest to learn more about skin care grew into a passion.
I returned to school and became a Licensed Medical Esthetician certified in medical peels. Through the years, I've had the opportunity to work alongside Board Certified Physicians. My experience includes working with dermatologists for several years, revolving around treating patients with both medical conditions as well as cosmetic needs.
This included working with patients providing skin consultations to recommend non-medical treatments, medical facials, micro-dermabrasion, medical peels, laser skin rejuvenation, cellulite treatments using a medical device and more. I also had the opportunity to utilize medical grade devices as well as products. I later moved on to work with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and gained experience working on the “other side” of skin care – recapturing youth.
FAQ's
How do I prevent my skin from sagging? You definitely need to take an active approach to skin care by doing a few simple things to keep skin firm: Keep hydrated. Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day.
Keep skin clean. Clean and moisturize daily.
DON’T SMOKE. Smoking and recreational drugs take a heavy toll on your skins appearance and accelerate the skin’s aging process.
What do I use to clean my face?
You should always clean your face with a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type – oily, dry, or combination skin. Personally, I feel that one should avoid most soap products since most are chemical based and very harsh on the skin and tend to dry it out and strip it of nutrients.
How do I keep my skin looking younger?
Moisturize daily, preferably in the morning. Use products with an SPF of 15 or higher. Exercise regularly. Plenty of rest. You need 7 – 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Proper nutrition. Eat healthy whole foods like fruits and vegetables, avoid processed and fast foods, and no smoking.
What skin care products work best?
It depends on what you are looking to do for your skin. There have been many breakthroughs in science and natural health that have resulted in cosmetic products that claim to do just about everything, but beware of fad products that are not clinically tested.
Base your skin care regiment on common sense and time tested products from reputable sources.
What type of routine do I do at night for my face?
There are many different things that you can do, but a good basic routine that I recommend:
Wash with a quality cleanser Apply a light coat of Vita C serum to entire face Then a good night time firming cream around the eyes
This is a very good basic routine that will do wonders for preserving your youthful appearance.
I’ve heard that poor diet and being inactive can damage my skins appearance, is this true?
Yes. Regular exercise and good nutrition are essential to maintaining younger looking, healthy skin – healthy skin glows from the inside out!
What products can I use to get rid of wrinkles and fine lines?
Most people nowadays are opting away from invasive surgical procedures and are seeking natural skin care alternatives. There are several affordable creams and masks available over the counter and at drug stores that can help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as many anti-aging products – but buyer beware!
Once again, it boils down to your daily regimen of skin care – use a quality cleanser, moisturize daily, protect your skin from the sun, eat right, exercise regularly, and don’t smoke. Remember, if you are not taking care of your body as a whole, it will reflect in your skins appearance.
What can I do about pigmentation?
Excessive sun exposure can exaggerate the pigmentation and make it worse. You should always use SPF 15 or higher when going in the sun. There are certain lightening creams that are available that will help in making the pigmentation less apparent.
What vitamins are good for the skin?
VITAMIN A - a powerful antioxidant that strengthens the protective tissue of the skin.
VITAMIN B COMPLEX – fights acne and is important in the functioning of your immune system.
VITAMIN C – aids in stabilizing collagen and is also a very powerful antioxidant. When applied topically to the skin itself, it can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and build firmness in the skin.
VITAMIN E – another antioxidant that when applied topically it has been known to improve smoothness, skin texture, and moisture levels.
What SPF do you recommend?
You should use an SPF of 15 or higher and there are many companies that are making moisturizers with SPF already in them, just make sure there is an adequate level of protection.
During pregnancy do I still use the same skin products I normally use?
During pregnancy your body and skin go through tremendous changes. You may have once had oily skin and now it’s dry. You may experience blotching in your pigmentation or dark circles under your eyes. Not to worry, this is usually a temporary change through the gestational period.
Sometimes these signs and symptoms are an indication of vitamin and mineral deficiency – be sure to take your prenatal vitamins and follow doctors orders. Usually diet and exercise plus plenty of rest can do wonders.
If you experience allergic reactions to products you have used for years, check with your doctor. Also, remember to check the products that you are using because some may not be suitable or safe for pregnant women. All natural products can be good to use.
Are facials good for your skin?
Yes, they are not just a luxury – professional facials give you a deep cleansing that you generally would not be able to achieve at home. Some of the benefits of regular facials include:
Deep cleansing of pores and helps prevent build up of dirt and oils in the pores Improved circulation Improved elasticity Facials can help greatly in maintaining a youthful appearance and younger looking skin. Once per month is generally considered ideal
